Confusion reigns over a change in legislation in Florida requiring all drivers to possess an International Drivers Permit. Whilst the legislation was initially passed to deal with the influx of travellers with non-English licenses, the legislation drafted includes all drivers, including those with an English licence such as those with Irish, British, South African and Australian licenses.

Whilst the DHSMV has indicated that it will defer enforcement, the fact remains that all non-US drivers are still required to carry an IDP and, there is some confusion as to whether a driver not in possession of an IDP will be insured in the event of an accident.

Even some car hire companies are reported to be unsure or unaware of the new legislation. Whilst others are simply refusing to hire cars to travellers without an IDP. Car Hire Assistant is a car rental price comparison site. Compare car hire prices.

Germany’s largest car rental company Sixt has commenced the implementation of its plans to create a franchise network in the USA. The company will not only continue expanding Sixt’s own system of rental stations, but it also wants to purchase franchise partners in different states in order that it can increase the rate of expansion in the car hire market in the USA, and strengthen the placement of the Sixt brand. This stage is part of its international growth plan, presently the emphasis of much of the company’s activities.

Over 100 possible franchisees have already approached by Sixt in the USA. They come from practically every state in the country with a distinct geographical emphasis on economically crucial locations and important tourist destinations. It is anticipated that the first independent car hire companies with their own car fleets and with services which accomplish the requisite tiers could start as Sixt franchisees before the end of this year.

Erich Sixt, CEO of Sixt AG: “For many years now, cooperating with local franchise partners has been a cornerstone in our expansion overseas. Establishing a franchise network in the hugely important US market plays a key role in these plans. Due to our successful progress in the USA and the tremendous interest shown by potential franchisees we are able to start pursuing this strategic objective only one year after making our debut in the US market. Sixt has quickly made a name for itself in the USA.”

Craig A. Olson, Vice President Sixt Franchise USA: “Independent car rental companies and growth-minded local entrepreneurs now have a unique opportunity to join the internationally successful Sixt Franchise system early in our drive to expand in the USA. By working with Sixt, they will be able to grow quickly as our company makes progress.”

Sixt began expanding in the USA in the spring of 2011 when it launched its first rental office in Florida. The firm now has 5 rental offices throughout the state, which are located in Miami (2), Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Orlando. Throughout the course of 2012, Sixt has established additional important bases for its car hire business in Atlanta (Georgia) and Phoenix (Arizona), both of which are crucial transport hubs in the United States.

Los Angeles is on track for what will be a record-breaking tourism year, officials with the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board (LA Tourism) have announced.  A mid-year forecast projects the destination will welcome 41.3 million visitors by year end, some 2.4 percent above the current record of 40.3 million visitors set in 2011.

For the first half of the year, the destination’s leading indicators for visitor volume posted positive gains over last year including:

hotel occupancy in the month of July averaged 83.9 percent, the highest monthly occupancy rate in the last 25 years of reported lodging metrics; month-over-month hotel occupancy rates have exceed 2011 occupancy rates every month this year; year-to-date hotel occupancy through July is 76.1 percent, up 4.5 percent over the same time period last year; passenger traffic at LAX through the end of July was up 3.3 percent over 2011, putting the airport on pace to exceed 2007 pre-recession passenger totals.

“This is great news for our local tourism industry and our local economy.  Every visitor and every visitor dollar spent plays a critical role in creating jobs and in keeping our local economy strong,” said LA Tourism President and CEO Mark Liberman.  “With the new Tourism Marketing District support, we now have a stronger voice in the increasingly competitive travel space that is already paying off and helping to drive demand to visit.”

LA’s tourism industry continues to benefit from strong domestic visitation from key markets including San Francisco, San Diego, New York City, Phoenix, Sacramento and Chicago; its position as a gateway city for Asia, including the growing China market; and the outlook for emerging markets in South America, especially Brazil.

LA Tourism launches a new domestic arts and culture campaign this fall to inspire travel to Los Angeles during October and November, traditionally a shoulder season for the destination.  In the first quarter of 2013, the organization will launch a new domestic consumer branding campaign designed to inspire travelers to choose Los Angeles for spring and summer travel and continue its popular dineLA restaurant program.  Internationally, LA Tourism has plans to launch expanded marketing efforts in Canada, the UK and Australia and to pursue new global meetings, incentives, exhibitions and tradeshows (MICE) business.

Heathrow passengers are the first in the world to use an revolutionary technology as component of the airport’s drive to further enhance the passenger experience. Terminal 1 passengers are being asked to participate in a 2 month ‘self-boarding’ trial in collaboration with South African Airways, which makes use of biometric data to help them board their flights quicker and more efficiently.

Once passengers arrive at the ‘self-boarding’ gate, they pass through an automatic electronic barrier which takes an infrared scan of their face. This data is verified against the biometric data that was taken at the check-in stage. When the 2 sets of data scans are successfully met, the barrier opens and the passenger can pass through and board their flight. The technology means that a passenger’s identification only needs to be checked by airline staff once during the whole departure process, minimising the amount of time it takes for passengers...
