Low Cost airline easyJet is adding 2 new routes from Manchester Airport and Edinburgh Airport to Reykjavik Airport, which will begin in March 2013. Twice weekly flights will leave Edinburgh and Manchester from 14 and 21 March 2013 respectively.

The flights will leave Edinburgh on Monday’s and Thursdays and Manchester on Thursdays and Sundays.

Earlier this year, easyJet operated its initial flight to Reykjavik from London Luton Airport – a route which has proved to be popular with passengers both in the UK and Iceland.

The Luton – Reykjavik service is now being expanded from 3 to 4 flights per week all through the year, providing the total number of easyJet flights to the destination to 8 per week from next March. The extra flight will operate on a Friday.

Paul Simmons, UK Director at easyJet, commented:“We’re delighted to be expanding our flights from the UK to Reykjavik in response to the route’s growing popularity. The destination is proving popular for leisure and business travellers alike with easyJet fares available from as little as £24.99 (one way including taxes).

“easyJet has carried almost 30,000 passengers between London and Reykjavik since its London Luton service to the city launched in March and we anticipate over 75,000 more passengers will take advantage of the easy and affordable flights from Manchester and Edinburgh next Summer.”

“We’re confident that uptake from passengers in both Manchester and Scotland will help the UK’s connections with Iceland to go from strength to strength.”

WOW Air commences its twice weekly service from London Gatwick airport to Reykjavik airport, Iceland.

Departing from Gatwick every Monday at 1315hrs, the flight will arrive in Reykjavik at 1525hrs with the return flight departing Reykjavik every Friday at 1620hrs and arriving in to Gatwick at 2020hrs. The A320 aircraft can accommodate 168 passengers on its direct flight between the two cities.

Matt Wood, Head of Airline Relations at London Gatwick Airport said: “We are delighted to welcome WOW Air and its passengers to the airport today. Reykjavik saw a 12% increase in UK tourists between 2010-11, and we feel that by adding this twice-weekly service we are catering for our passengers who want to visit phenomena’s such as the Northern Lights. It also means that in peak season Gatwick will have three carriers that cater for up to 15 flights leaving for Reykjavik every week.”

Over the past three years, Gatwick has been transforming the airport through a £1.2 billion investment programme to compete for airlines and grow passenger numbers. The delivery of speedier check-in and security processes for passengers and the direct and fast transport links into central London are just a few of the reasons why airlines such as Air China, Korean Air, Turkish Airlines and Vietnam Airlines have already chosen to operate from Gatwick this year alone.

The Icelandic government has published proposals to raise the value added tax (VAT) on accommodation, restaurant meals and attractions from seven per cent to 25.5 per cent as of the May 1st 2013. This proposal more than trebles the tax on all those services that tourists need to purchase.

Two-thirds of Iceland’s population live in Reykjavik, therefore hotel use is dominated by visitors: 90 per cent of hotel rooms in July 2012 were occupied by foreigners. This tax is aimed directly at an export market.

The inbound tourism industry has been one of Iceland’s success stories over the last fifteen years. Foreign arrivals in 1997 were 210,000, in 2011 they were 598,000. A lot of this growth is recent: 2012 is set to match 2011’s annual increase of more than 16 per cent growth in foreign visitor arrivals. The number of nights these people stayed increased by 20 per cent.

Tom Jenkins, ETOA chief executive, said “Iceland was in a benign state: they were increasing their visitors and length of stay. Much of the drive behind this growth has been Iceland losing its perception as an expensive destination.“This tax rise, imposing a sudden price increase of 17 per cent, effectively punctures that impression.”

“What is strange is that Iceland has been a text-book example of the virtues of cutting indirect taxation in tourism. In 2007 it halved tax on tourism services from 14 per cent to seven per cent. By 2008 tax receipts from tourism were six per cent higher than they had been in 2006.”

“This tax rise is being introduced at the start of the inbound tourism season, just when it will do the most damage. It penalises any operator who has signed contracts and published brochures featuring Iceland next year. No company can absorb such a surcharge.”

“Iceland is a wonderful destination: an extraordinary civilisation set in an astonishing geological region. But this tax is a stinging rebuke to anyone who has chosen to invest in promoting Iceland as a destination.”

Heathrow passengers are the first in the world to use an revolutionary technology as component of the airport’s drive to further enhance the passenger experience. Terminal 1 passengers are being asked to participate in a 2 month ‘self-boarding’ trial in collaboration with South African Airways, which makes use of biometric data to help them board their flights quicker and more efficiently.

Once passengers arrive at the ‘self-boarding’ gate, they pass through an automatic electronic barrier which takes an infrared scan of their face. This data is verified against the biometric data that was taken at the check-in stage. When the 2 sets of data scans are successfully met, the barrier opens and the passenger can pass through and board their flight. The technology means that a passenger’s identification only needs to be checked by airline staff once during the whole departure process, minimising the amount of time it takes for passengers...

Dubai International has broken another monthly record by receiving, for the first time, more than 5.5 million passengers in a single month. South African Airways Extreme Fares campaign has seen exceptional 2013 figures for the airline in the UK, with income up 70 per cent year-on-year across some channels. The unprecedented improvement in January bookings comes after the recent launch of South African Airways’ focused winter adventure travel marketing campaign.

This witnessed the airline partner with adventurer Charley Boorman for his 4 part TV series Charley Boorman’s South African Adventure, which was broadcast on Channel 5 and exhibited South Africa’s ultimate experiences throughout January. The country was also in the limelight last month on the BBC as a consequence of David Attenborough’s ‘Africa’ show. Both shows generated interest which SAA were able to expolit.

Jon Danks head of UK&I marketing & communications, SAA said: “The integrated campaign ran across key digital, print, and social media channels, anchored to the range of adventures showcased in both shows.

“Our tie up with Charley and Channel 5 presented...
