Swiss International Airlines has announced it will start a new service between Singapore Changi International Airport and Zurich Airport in May 2013.

The new route will be operated making use of the Airbus A340-300 aircraft providing 219 seats. The westbound LX179 flight will leave from Singapore at 23:05 and arrive in Zurich at 06:10 the subsequent day. The eastbound LX178 service will depart Zurich at 22:45 landing in Singapore at 17:10 the following day.

Flights can be booked via the swiss.com website and all other reservations agencies and outlets from 8th October 2012.

“Singapore is one of Switzerland’s most important intercontinental markets, and one that has seen constant growth over the past few years,” said Magdalene Ong, SWISS country manager Singapore.

“By providing our new daily service to Singapore, we aim to meet this substantial demand. Our new non-stop flights between two of the leading business and financial centres in Europe and South-east Asia will ideally complement the existing services offered by our Star Alliance partners,” Ong continued.

“Given the excellence of Singapore’s Changi hub, they should also prove popular with connecting leisure travellers from Australia, New Zealand and Asia’s growth markets looking to visit Switzerland and its many vacation resorts.”

Singapore Airlines will launch daily services to Yangon on 28 October 2012 to cater to rapidly growing demand for travel to Myanmar. Together with regional subsidiary SilkAir, the SIA Group will serve Yangon with 16 weekly flights.

SilkAir currently operates 16 weekly flights to Yangon with single-aisle Airbus A320-family aircraft. SIA will take over seven of those flights with larger 323-seat Boeing 777-200 widebody aircraft, increasing weekly seat capacity by 55%.

“Demand has been growing strongly for both business and leisure travel to Myanmar, and Singapore Airlines looks forward to serving the country for the first time,” said SIA Executive Vice President Commercial, Mr Mak Swee Wah, who is also Chairman of SilkAir.

“SIA and SilkAir are constantly looking at new market opportunities and the launch of SIA services enables us to quickly meet the growing demand for travel to this increasingly popular destination.”

Yangon is the largest city in Myanmar and it once served as the country’s capital. Today it serves as Myanmar’s economic centre, in addition to being a popular tourist destination.

Singapore Airlines is formally launching In-Flight Connectivity as part of a US$50 million programme to bring internet and mobile data services to customers, even when flying at 35,000ft.

Following a recent soft launch on a limited number of aircraft, In-Flight Connectivity is today available on 14 aircraft in the fleet, including all five Airbus A340-500s which are deployed on the world’s longest non-stop flights, between Singapore and both Newark and Los Angeles.

Services have also been extended to more markets such as Australia, for which regulatory approvals had not previously been obtained.

Travellers can surf the Internet, send and receive emails on smartphones and other electronic devices, and send and receive SMS text messages with GSM-compatible mobile phones.

Through a partnership with leading connectivity provider OnAir, the technology will be progressively rolled out across all of SIA’s long-haul Airbus A380-800, A340-500 and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft over the next two years.

Services are offered on routes on which equipped aircraft are deployed, subject to regulatory approvals from individual countries. A map highlighting availability when flying over specific countries is published in the Airline’s KrisWorld in-flight entertainment magazine.

Upgrade works at Changi Terminal 1, the oldest terminal at the airport, have been completed at an estimated cost of S$500 million. The project has given the terminal a fresh, rejuvenated look as well as improving passenger flows in key areas. About 22,000 square metres of space have also been added to the building, bringing the total floor space to about 308,000 square metres.

Tropical City

Developed on the thematic concept of a ‘Tropical City’, improvements to the façade and terminal facilities were undertaken with the aim of improving the airport experience for passengers. Changes were made to the layout of the terminal, with the introduction of easier ways to find airport facilities. Added to this, higher ceilings, improved lighting, wider thoroughfares and thoughtful landscaping have all contributed to a high quality experience that is synonymous with the Changi Experience.

A major challenge facing the project engineers was to carry out the upgrading whilst Terminal 1 remained operational. This meant that works had to be completed in phases during the four year period to accommodate the different operational requirements of the terminal’s users. A total of 1.5 million man hours were utilised during the project, and at its peak, 385 workers could be found on site at the terminal, toiling round the clock to ensure disruption was kept to a minimum. A highlight of the revamped Departure Check-in Hall is the addition of one of the world’s largest kinetic art sculptures. Known as Kinetic Rain, this sculpture is made up of a total of 1,216 bronze droplets, moving in synchrony to a specially choreographed dance every day.

Philippines’ flag-carrier Cebu Pacific is set to begin a thrice weekly direct service from Singapore to Iloilo on November 9th. The move will make the central Philippine city the airline’s fifth domestic hub. Dubbed the ‘Province of Festivals’, Iloilo lies on the south coast of Panay Island.

Its rich heritage is showcased in a variety of festivals, such as colourful street dances of the Dinagyang Festival, celebrated in the city and towns of the province. Iloilo is also known for its local gastronomic delights – from La Paz Batchoy (hot noodle dish with rich broth) to the world-famous mangoes of Guimaras Island, foodies will have a lot to discover in Iloilo.

“The launch of this new route will be in time for the delivery of three more brand-new Airbus A320 aircraft in the second half of 2012. CEB will continue to stimulate travel to, from and within the Philippines with the most extensive route network and trademark lowest fares,” said CEB vice president for marketing and distribution Candice Iyog.

In line with the announcement of direct flights from Singapore to Iloilo, CEB will also be launching twice weekly flights from Hong Kong to Iloilo, four weekly flights from General Santos to Iloilo, and increase the frequency of the daily service from Manila to Iloilo to seven times a day.

Dubai International has broken another monthly record by receiving, for the first time, more than 5.5 million passengers in a single month. According to the traffic report issued by Dubai Airports, passenger traffic rose by 14.6 per cent to 5,559,760 in January 2013, up from 4,852,139 for the same period in 2012.
